March 23, 2020 - Keep Holding Faith, Together

Dear Friends,

I wanted you to hear directly from your Second Church family on the heels of today’s announcements by Governor Eric Holcomb and Mayor Joe Hogsett. I want to reiterate, that no matter the news, we are indeed holding faith, together. You can read the Governor’s announcement here. Mayor Hogsett’s statement can be found here.

As part of Governor Holcomb’s address, he specifically mentioned the way Indiana’s faith communities have shown great leadership in these trying times. And we echo that. You, the Body of Christ, have shown that compassion, kindness, love, and prayer are not limited to building, time, or place. You have shown that love is greater than fear and that living faithfully is what we, as people of faith, do. You have led by example. Today’s news does not change any of this – in fact, it only affirms that we must keep leading.

On March 15, I preached a sermon about what we do know. And as I said on that first Sunday of this new reality, these truths hold no matter the circumstance. I share them with you here as a source of stability, comfort, and guidance:

  • I know that God who is sovereign over the universe and numbers the hairs on our head is a God of compassion, love, and grace.
  • I know that you and I, and all the beloved souls on this planet belong to God and are held in the loving arms of God.
  • I know that we belong to each other and that God has given us a charge to live in ways that honor this truth.
  • I know that while sanctuaries can be emptied and programs can be canceled, the Body of Christ that is the church is yet alive with the Spirit of God.
  • I know that the power of love is stronger than all that works against it.

As always, I want you to know that your church is here for you. We are praying along with you and we are embracing the strength of our fellowship. We will continue to stay in close touch and wade through these waters together.

Peace and grace,

Chris
