Standing on Holy Ground:  Cultivating the Fertile Spiritual Soil of Young Adulthood

Reverend Laura Peck Arico, Chaplain at Hanover College

Transplanting a seedling is dangerous business.  It's a period of vulnerability, adaptation, and stress, and if it's done right, it's a period of tremendous potential for growth.  Our college students find themselves at precisely this stage of their spiritual life - away from the safety of home, battered by new winds, learning to feed themselves.  How do we as a church care for our transplanted seedlings and give them the tools they need to thrive in this critical stage of faith development?  Contrary to our cultural mythology, it isn't inevitable that our transplanted faithful will be lost to the elements.  But it's up to us to learn new ways of cultivating the sacred.

Rev. Laura Peck Arico is Chaplain at Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana.  She has a passion for service-learning, vocational discernment, and holistic wellness, and she educates her students to deepen their faith through compassionate, intentional care of both self and others.

Outside of the office, Rev. Arico and her husband manage the Madison Area Growers CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), connecting local growers with a reliable customer base.  Rev. Arico is also a trained birth doula.  An ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), she lives and gardens in Madison, IN.

Hanover College is a private, coeducational liberal arts, college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Founded in 1827, Hanover is the oldest private college in Indiana.

This spring Laura will share her experience working with students who are searching for faith and meaning.  Come hear how God is at work among college students today.
