"Beauty
is our sensory access to holiness. God reveals
himself, that is, God's life in creation and in
Christ, in ways that we can see and hear and touch
and taste--in place and person. Beauty is the
term we apply to these hints of transcendence,
these perceptions that there is more going on
here than we can account for." -Eugene
Peterson, The Beauty of Holiness.
Through the arts, God can instruct and inspire
the human heart. From our soaring architecture
to our Rose Window and Ascension Window, and from
our wood carvings to our etched and stained glass
windows, the congregation of Second Presbyterian
Church embraces the fine arts as a means of nurture,
instruction and expression of faith. We affirm
a ministry of visual and fine arts in which the
best gifts are shaped by and offered in worship
of God, in special events in which the sacred
arts are presented and engaged on their own terms
though not for their own sake.
Through our music and
fine arts ministry team, the congregation seeks
to glorify God and to educate and enrich members
of the congregation and the community by encouraging,
staging performances of, and exhibiting selected
art works of congregation members, along with
local, regional, national and international originators
of sacred works.
