The Choir School at Second Presbyterian Church offers a comprehensive curriculum of choral music that nurtures the spiritual and artistic development of children age three through sixth grade. A curriculum of music and worship engages children and parents and fosters artistic and religious interaction with church members and the community. Emphasis is placed on learning to read music, developing vocal technique, and performing quality sacred repertoire. The musical experiences provided in choir school provide a wonderful complement to what children are learning in worship and church school.
The Choir School encourages all children to discover and explore their creative abilities and to engage those abilities in the worship of God. The curriculum is designed to establish and sustain an understanding of the arts as a manifestation of God’s grace and beauty. Our Choir School places the creative process within the context of the worship life and theological perspectives of Second Presbyterian Church.
Choir school ensembles meet on Sunday mornings during the 11:00 service, September through May. The choirs are invited to sing for various services throughout the year, providing an outlet for children to learn to express their love of God through music. The majority of choir events take place on Sunday mornings, making it possible for families with busy weekday schedules to participate in choir. All children are invited to join, regardless of previous experience. Our teachers create a warm, supportive environment for students of all ability levels.
Special performances by our children's choirs include Christmas Music Sunday, the Christmas Eve Service, Palm Sunday, and other festival Sundays. Occasionally, the children are invited to join with the adult choirs, full orchestra, and guest artists for special anthems. Each year, the children enjoy a visit and performance by the Indianapolis Opera during their regular rehearsal time. A spring concert including all three choirs is a highlight of the season. There are occasional special rehearsals prior to performances.
An important benefit of membership in choir is the fellowship and joy that members experience from working together to create beautiful music. Outreach events such as singing at local nursing homes teach children about the use of talents in the service of God while connecting our church with the greater community. Occasional social events such as pizza parties, holiday parties, etc. add an element of fun and foster a sense of belonging within the church community.
The
mission of the music program for children is to
develop:
1. the God-given talents of all children
2. the use of talents in the service of God
3. the understanding of a creative God through personal creative expression
4. the skills of music fundamentals and ensemble techniques
5. tradition through learning of scripture, sacrament, doctrine and history
