Monday Memo - August 17, 2020

Hello Second Family,

Just as the Apostle Paul wrote to the Philippians – “I thank my God every time I remember you,” – I, too, begin my new week with gratitude for you. For your commitment to Jesus Christ and the mission of Second Presbyterian Church. I greet you this Monday with hope and expectation for our journey that goes on, for the faithful work as people of God that calls us forward.

In worship yesterday we learned that Paul wrote those words of gratitude while in prison. And that Jonah, while swallowed up in the belly of a whale, offered words of thankfulness. In both stories, we are reminded that gratitude is a choice. Even when it is difficult, we can choose gratitude. Second Church has chosen this path for nearly 200 years – choosing thankfulness that anticipates a gift not yet experienced. Amidst crisis and the unknown, thankfulness for the gift of growing more intentional as a welcoming community of faith where Jesus Christ transforms lives; thankfulness for the gift of holding faith, together; thankfulness for the clarity of our call to serve our neighbors, to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:8); thankfulness for the faithful work that lies ahead and the gospel message we are here to show and tell.

This week, anticipating the gift of ministry our new Lake Fellows Kelly Spencer and Lex Allum will bring to Second over the coming two years, we give thanks. This week, for the work that begins to call our next class of elders, deacons, and nominating committee, we give thanks. This week, for the work that will happen within Northside Food Pantry, we give thanks. This week, anticipating the growth that comes with listening and sharpening one another as disciples of Christ, we give thanks

When we find ourselves in deep waters, seasons of life when we are stretched and strained, we can grow toward gratitude. Like Jonah, we can trust the God of hope and deliverance. We can thank God for the grace and mercy sure to come. And for the promise of scripture that sustains us.

With peace and grace,
Chris

We give thanks for ways to learn and grow.
