We light the first candle to symbolize the hope of God’s people who wait on the Lord’s coming. Long ago the prophets told that God would send the Messiah to save the people from their sins. As Isaiah has written, “Those who wait upon for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”
