For over one and a half centuries Second Church has ministered to people in Central Indiana and proclaimed the Good News of Jesus Christ. We were one of the first congregations started in Indianapolis, and our first facility was located on the Circle downtown.

Our first pastor, Henry Ward Beecher, is considered as one of the Nineteenth Century’s best preachers and from a family that was instrumental in the anti-slavery movement, which was inspired by the literary works of his sister, Harriett Beecher Stowe. Our church organized the first church choir in the city. We were the first to create a grade-related curriculum for children’s Sunday School. We began the first urban outreach center for low-income families to receive services for education, food and clothing.

When the congregation out grew its facility on the Circle, the church relocated in 1870 to the corner of Vermont and Pennsylvania Streets. In 1959 the congregation again relocated and moved to its present site at 7700 North Meridian Street. The congregation continued to grow in numbers, and two additions were made to add educational and program rooms to the facility.
