Throughout the year there are many special seasonal opportunities for worship.
The Season of Lent and Holy Week
The Season of Lent opens with the Ash Wednesday Communion Service that is held in the evening at
7 p.m. Special services and studies mark each week of the Lenten Season. Palm Sunday worship features special music by the children and adult choirs. It has been a tradition at Second to have a Palm Sunday processional with a live donkey. During Holy Week, the Maundy Thursday Tenebrae Service, 8 p.m., includes the celebration of communion. Wednesday nights during Lent also offer several options for christian education.
Easter
On Easter Sunday we gather as a community to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. There is a Sunrise Communion Service at 6:30 a.m. in McFarland Hall in which the youth participate as leaders. There are also five more worship services: 8, 9:30, 11:15 a.m., Families@Five, 5 p.m. & Second@Six at 6 p.m.
Thanksgiving
On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, we join with other Jewish and Christian congregations for our annual Wednesday Evening Northside Community Interfaith Thanksgiving Service.
The Advent and Christmas Seasons
Christmas Music Sunday is usually celebrated on the Third Sunday of Advent at 9:30 and 11:15 a.m. services. The service includes familiar carols, guest musicians, and special Christmas music provided by the church choirs.
On Christmas Eve there are four services of Worship in the Sanctuary at 4, 7, 9 and 11 p.m. Communion is served by intinction at the 11 p.m. service. There is special music featuring choir, organ, brass and percussion 30 minutes before the 9 and 11 p.m. service. Our 4 p.m. service is designed specifically for families with children. |
