The Northside Mission ministry team, in partnership with Greenbriar Elementary located at 82nd and Ditch, has started a reading assessment program.
The process is quite simple. The student reads to the volunteer, and the volunteer checks for missed words. This information is given to the teacher to determine the child's progress.
School Background
Greenbriar has over 800 students in 31 classrooms. There is a 40% mobility rate, which means that from August to May, 40% of the student population changes. Over 25% of the students are in English as a New Language program.
Commitment
One hour, one day a week. That's it! Each volunteer would be asked to commit to one hour, one day a week until the end of school. It would be the same day and hour each week with the same five students selected by the teacher. Training consists of a short one-on-one session with the reading specialist. A background check is mandatory for each volunteer.
