Wednesday Evening Lenten Bible Study: Wisdom and Her Discontents: A Study of the Wisdom Literature of the Bible. Meets Wednesdays, March 16-April 12, 7:15 to 8:15 p.m.)
Wisdom is said to “be better than silver ... and more precious than jewels” (Proverbs 3:14-15). But if we’re honest, sometimes what passes for wisdom tastes like ashes in our mouths. Yet surprisingly, the wisdom literature of the Bible recognizes this: time and time again, we see one of God’s chosen ones rejecting putative wisdom, and insisting on the genuine article. Thus Job (to cite only one example) having heard enough of the supposed wisdom of his supposed comforters, cries out, “Where shall wisdom be found?” That will be the question for this Bible study, and we’ll give due consideration to the Psalmist’s answer: “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
