Frequently Asked Questions

Registration and Enrollment

  • How do we get on the Wait List?
Click here to download an application. Once we receive your completed application, your child will be put on our wait list or enrolled, depending on current enrollment.

Curriculum

  • How do you handle religion?
We are a ministry of Second Presbyterian Church. The children learn about God through daily activities such as stories, songs and art.
  • What kind of curriculum do you use?
We follow the developmental continuum of The Creative Curriculum for Infants and Toddlers and The Creative Curriculum for Preschool. We teach skills through hands-on, developmentally appropriate activities.

Staff

  • Do your teachers have degrees?
Our Mother’s Day Out teachers must have a high school diploma, although many have Bachelors degrees. Our Preschool teachers must have a Bachelors degree or Child Development Associate Certificate (CDA).

Discipline

  • How do you handle discipline?
Discipline problems are rare; however, sometimes young children need help understanding appropriate behavior. Usually a misbehaving child simply needs to be redirected and the desired behavior explained in simple terms. Corporal punishment is never used.

School Readiness

  • What do we do if my child has separation difficulty?
Our teachers are experienced with children who are reluctant to come to school. We know that some children need to come for several weeks before feeling comfortable. We work with parents to determine when the parents wish to be called if a child is having a difficult day.
  • What if my child can’t handle the program?
Occasionally a very young child is just not ready to be away from home. If after a month the child is still miserable, we might suggest that the parents take a break for a few months, and then try again.
  • Does my child need to be toilet trained?
Mother’s Day Out children do not need to be toilet trained; however, our teachers are prepared to help children with the toilet training process. Due to Health Department regulations, preschool children must be completely toilet trained, with accidents few and far between.

School Day

  • Do we bring children to the rooms or drop the children off at the curb?
Our parents accompany their children to the classrooms, and pick them up there at the end of the day.
  • Do we need to bring a lunch for our child or does the program supply one?
Every child brings lunch from home.
  • What do I need to bring for my child’s day?
Preschool children need comfortable play clothes, lunch and a towel for rest time. Mother’s Day Out children also need extra diapers, a change of clothing and perhaps a special “lovey” for naptime.
  • Do the children take naps?
The children in Mother’s Day Out take naps in cribs or on cots. The Preschool children have a rest period every day. Some nap, others have a quiet time and look at books.
  • Do the children go on fieldtrips?
We have the field trips come to us. Some examples are the Fire Department, the Indy Parks Nature Trailer, and the Dental School.

Security

  • How does your program deal with security issues?
  1. There is only one entrance to the building.
  2. The church is equipped with security cameras.
  3. We have parents sign children in and out.
  4. Children may leave only with an adult whose name is in our files. Each family has a special security word in case your plans change during the day.
  5. Teachers are always aware of their surroundings and adults who are nearby.
