Children’s
Ministries thrive at Second Presbyterian Church.
A visit to the preschool ministry on the second
floor or the elementary age ministry on the third
floor may leave you breathless as you witness
the remarkable number of children and parents
who bustle through the halls and classrooms on
any given Sunday. For questions, information,
or to become a volunteer, please call or e-mail the church at 253-6461.
The 9:30 a.m. hour on Sunday morning focuses
on Christian Education. We have classes for children
nursery through fifth grade. Each classroom is
staffed with at least two teachers, who have gone
through thorough background checks, and most of
whom are parents. All are vitally interested in
the spiritual nurture and health of the young
members of our family of faith.
Of particular note is our unique Rotation Workshop
Model which brings dynamic learning to our school
age children. We have witnessed our Sunday School
attendance double since its inception in 1995!
Families cut vacations short to get home by Sunday
for their children to attend! We have five permanent
workshops: Art, Drama, Video, Games and Mission.
Our Mystery workshop changes with each rotation.
Church School Details by Age:
Nursery care: We show God’s love for his
precious children from the earliest ages on through
the way we care for their safety and their needs.
Nursery care is available in room 240 during the
Sunday services at 8:30, 9:30 and 11 am, and in
room 211 during the Second at Six services. On
Sundays, we have paid staff that run the nursery
and supervise wonderful adult volunteers. Parents
may check out pagers in order to remain accessible
for their children’s safety or comfort needs.
Toddlers: With this age, we
begin to explore God’s love letter to us,
The Bible, through the loving attention of a teacher
who takes each child on her knee and shares a
weekly Bible verse as well as stories. Time during
9:30 church school hour includes soothing drop
off activities such as bubbles and music, unstructured
free play, and snack time. During 11 a.m. service,
toddlers participate in free play.
Children age Two through Six: Each room has a consistent lead teacher and wonderful
rotating adult volunteers who delight to share
God’s love with each child. We use Group’s
Hands-On Bible curriculum which provides sensory
experiences of the Bible’s major stories.
Parents can follow up on your children’s
lessons through weekly “Today I learned” sheets which include helpful family fun ideas.
During the 11 a.m. service, children not involved
in choir participate in free play.
Grades One through Five: Located
on the third floor, children attend a different
church school workshop each week. There are
six workshops, all teaching the same Bible story
for six weeks. But each workshop uses distinct
means to teach a different perspective of the
story. We have five permanent workshops: Art,
Drama, Video, Games, and Mission. Our Mystery
workshop changes with each rotation; it has
encompassed music, history. fine art, baking,
worship, puppetry and more. The Workshop Rotation
is just plain fun, as well as an exciting way
to learn the stories of God’s saving love
for his people.
